When we moved to San Francisco from Chicago, the SF skyline seemed downright quaint, in part presumably due to earthquake concerns. Plans are now being drawn up for a slew of new high rises, including what would be the tallest building west of Chicago. Even with the most iron-clad engineering guarantee to assuage my concerns, I would not want to be in the the nearly 1000 foot high rise during a quake!
I don't know how I came to check out A Primate's Memoir from the library (blog mention somewhere?) but it is one of the most entertaining books I've read of late. The exploits of the baboon troop he is studying are surprisingly interesting -- seriously -- but serve more as a way to set the table for the bigger story, which is his hair-raising hitchhiking travels across several East Central African countries.
